This brief identifies policy options that can be taken to improve the resilience, equity, and positive biodiversity conservation outcomes of EU trade policy. The brief identifies actions that could improve alignment between EU trade policies and sustainability objectives, moving beyond compliance-based approaches toward partnerships that enhance well-being for people and nature. Key actions include embedding binding provisions on biodiversity, human rights, and equitable livelihoods within trade agreements; ensuring that implementation of the Deforestation-free Products Regulation (EUDR) upholds the rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and smallholders; and using EU investment instruments to scale agroecological and socio-bioeconomy value chains that reward sustainable land use.
