Effectively monitoring the impact of forest restoration activities is essential. It generates the evidence needed to assess whether activities are achieving their intended goals and demonstrates positive change to communities, governments and international partners. This assessment of activities underpins adaptive management and makes it possible for decision makers to refine restoration approaches. The evidence provided by monitoring can also ease the burden faced by national agencies face to report against multiple global agreements, such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Forest Restoration Impact Monitoring Framework provides practical guidance for generating this valuable evidence.  While activity-based forest restoration monitoring is undeniably important, generating the necessary evidence goes further and measures the impact of activities. This framework supports site managers and national agencies to monitor the progress towards restoration impact goals, to manage adaptively and to align monitoring with global reporting commitments. Designed to meet the diverse contexts of the project partner countries, this framework is flexible and can be adapted to other national or local contexts. By providing a shared structure, it fosters harmonization and knowledge exchange across the region.
