UNEP-WCMC wrote several briefing notes for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20, covering different topics:
-
Synergies among multilateral environmental agreements and the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development: This briefing note draws on lessons learnt from previous work with respect to the biodiversity-related conventions and the Rio Conventions and makes suggestions on ways in UNEP-WCMC can help to support further efforts to improve synergies, cooperation and coordination among MEAs.
-
Biodiversity and ecosystem service indicators: Proposals for new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and new ways to measure progress beyond gross domestic product (GDP) which emerged from Rio+20 present a unique opportunity to reassess, refocus and redefine the global framework of indicators used to track, monitor and measure progress towards sustainable development. At the core of this framework is a need to have indicators on the status of the diversity of life (biodiversity) and the benefits that society derives from it (ecosystem services), such as clean air, fertile soil, fresh water, food, fuel, fibre and pharmaceuticals.
-
Biodiversity and ecosystem services under a green economy in the context of sustainable development
and poverty eradication : In June 2012, one of the two key themes on the agenda of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) was the Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication. Part of this discussion has focused on the failure of the current economic model to take into account the value of biodiversity, ecosystem services and human wellbeing. Rio+20 provided a unique opportunity to redefine the economic framework to ensure that healthy ecosystems and biodiversity are recognised as the foundation of a sustainable economy. Briefing note produced for Rio+20.
