Leach, K. Brooks, S.E., Blyth, S. (2016) Potential threat to areas of biodiversity importance from current and emerging oil and gas activities in Africa. UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, Cambridge, U.K.

Identifying areas of potential threat from current and emerging oil and gas activities in Africa enables governments, donors and civil society to prioritise efforts to engage with this industry and provides insight into potential risks for businesses and investors. This report assess the overlap of existing contract blocks, pipelines and future bidding/application blocks with areas of biodiversity importance, and identifies the potential threat of different sizes and types of operating companies to biodiversity. It highlights priority countries within Africa that are facing high potential threat and suggests a need to focus efforts towards single country and very large national companies in order to improve practice.
