(2017). Cross-border cooperation in Maritime Spatial Planning: Final report. Brussels, Belgium: European Commission and EASME.

This study presents lessons learned and recommendations for cross-border Maritime/Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) including in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, drawing upon detailed investigations of four non-European case studies:

  • Rhode Island Ocean Special Area Management Plan;
  • Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF);
  • the Commission for Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) in the Southern Ocean;
  • Marine Functional Zoning in Xiamen, China.

UNEP-WCMC contributed to the study as part of a consortium of partners coordinated by NIRAS and contracted by the European Commission. As part of this study, UNEP-WCMC developed a global inventory of non-European MSP processes and led on the production of the CCAMLR and CTI-CFF case studies. More information on the study can be found on the EC website, including links to Rhode Island and Xiamen case study report summaries.
