As a contribution to UN World Wildlife Day 2018 on the theme of ‘Big cats: predators under threat’, UNEP-WCMC has created an interactive dashboard that gives users the opportunity to view and explore the trends in the legal trade in big cats.
International trade in all big cats is regulated by the Appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international agreement signed by 182 countries and the European Union. CITES regulates the international trade in wildlife to ensure that the trade does not negatively impact the survival of species in the wild. Protection under CITES is important for all big cat species because unregulated and illegal trade poses serious threats to their survival. To find out more about big cats, including their conservation status and CITES listing, please head to http://www.wildlifeday.org/content/learn.
To support CITES implementation and to help with monitoring global, regional and national trade trends, UNEP-WCMC maintains the CITES Trade Database on behalf of the CITES Secretariat. The CITES Trade Database is the largest and most complete database of international trade in wildlife. CITES trade data is the official data submitted by Parties to the Convention and is publicly available via trade.cites.org/. The trade data is used by policy makers to make informed choices about the sustainability of international wildlife trade.
More information about the data included and the dashboard itself is provided on Page 2 of the dashboard.
